A Letter From:
Dear Mr & Mrs. Zaragoza Van Gelderen, Words alone cannot relay the pain that we all feel for you and your family with the passing of Matt. Although, I did not personally know Matt, the coaches and players of high school football all have a special bond that goes far beyond school rivalries and Friday night lights. It is a large family playing & coaching a game that they love. I am in my 10th year as a high school football coach and the last 5 as head freshman coach. From everything I've been told by fellow coaches, Matt was one of those young men that only comes around once in a while, dedicated, driven, respectful and most of all, had a passion for "the game". As a father of three, I cannot fathom what you are going through right now, but, please take solace knowing that Matt left this earth doing what he loved, playing football and making his parents proud. As I told my wife the other night after hearing of Matt's injury while watching our varsity play Modesto High, if I had my choice about it, I would like to take my last breath of air between the hash marks while smelling the fresh cut grass at Guss Schmeidt Field, then just carry me over and bury me on the 50 yard line. The Buffalo Freshman Football Family's thoughts and prayers are with you and your family,
Sincerely,
Jon G. Shaefer
